The Substitutionary Death of Christ and His Shed Blood

The Lord Jesus Christ died spiritually and physically on the Cross for all creation (1 John 2:2; Colossians 1:19-23) as a substitutionary sacrifice (Isaiah 53:5-6). His shed blood (Colossians 1:20), which he brought into the real Holy of Holies in Heaven (Hebrews 8:1-2; 9:24), paid once and for all for the penalty of sin (Hebrews 9:11-14; Ephesians 1:7; 1 John 1:7; Revelation 1:5), which is instant spiritual death and total separation from God [total inability to have a personal relationship with Him] (Romans 6:23). . . . As the progeny of fallen Adam, all humanity [except for the humanity of Jesus Christ] is born with a sin nature, born spiritually dead (Romans 5:12; 1 Corinthians 15:22a), born separated from God, born under condemnation in the lake of fire (Romans 5:18a), born enslaved to his body of sin (Romans 6:6; 7:5, 18). As a violation of God’s character [essence], sin is an outrage, an offense and insult to God’s perfect holiness or integrity: His righteousness and justice. Because all have sinned (Romans 3:23), all are unacceptable to God (Isaiah 64:6; Romans 8:8). God simply can have nothing to do with sin, unrighteousness, or the [relative] righteousness of fallen man. The [perfect] righteousness of God demands the condemnation of sin. What the righteousness of God demands, the justice of God executes; sin must be judged. . . . When the humanity of Jesus Christ endured the agony of the Cross from 9 A.M. [third hour] until 3 P.M. [ninth hour] on Nisan 14, approximately 3957-3958 AM [Anno Mundi] [Dead Sea Scroll Calendar] [approximately late March to early April A.D. 32-33 [Gregorian Calendar]] (John 19:14, 31, 42), He bore every sin that has ever been or will ever be committed in His body (1 Peter 2:24). At 12 P.M. [sixth hour], the sun was obscured and darkness fell over Golgotha—the crucifixion site (Matthew 27:45); it was then and there that all the sins of the world—past, present, and future—were imputed to Jesus Christ and judged. The instant sin touched His being, Jesus Christ became spiritually dead. Christ endured spiritual death for three hours on the Cross from 12 P.M. [sixth hour] to 3 P.M. [ninth hour]. Christ’s substitutionary spiritual death on the Cross, His subsequent physical death on the Cross three hours later, and His shed blood, which He offered up as legal tender upon entering the true Tabernacle in Heaven after His resurrection (John 20:17; Hebrews 8:1-2; 9:11-14, 24), fully propitiated [satisfied] God the Father’s demand for payment of sin, diverting the wrath of God and providing atonement [reparation] for all creation. Christ’s spiritual death, physical death, and shed blood together accomplished the work of redemption and established the way of reconciliation whereby all humanity may be delivered from death and eternal condemnation in the lake of fire to life and eternal bliss in the presence of the LORD. Christ’s completed work of redemption established once and for all as fully sufficient the basis for eternal salvation [everlasting life with God]. His completed work of redemption authenticated the way of salvation through non-meritorious faith alone in Christ alone for all who would believe (Acts 16:31; Romans 3:23-26, 10:13; John 1:12).
